If you travel Internationally and miss food from home, keep the Hard Rock Cafe in mind. I travel with someone that doesn't always care for the local cuisine, so this is our go to and now our tradition. I can attest to the food tasting pretty much the same at all location around the world.
I love a well thought out itinerary. If you change things up while you're there, then great, but at least you will have an idea of your options. If you just go with the flow the entire time, you're likely to miss out on some great opportunities.
Do your research, especially regarding the hotel. A bad hotel will ruin everything because you won't get restful sleep.
Research the hours and dates open for the places you wont to go. You could save a spot till the last day, only to discover that's the day they are closed. Don't miss out because you failed to do your research!
Don't miss out on your points for flights or hotels. Credit cards offer a lot, and I'll go into that, but just using a companies service usual offers miles or points. You should always register. It's free and the points and mileage usually don't expire. It's a free benefit, so why not? I have always registered my own, as well as my kids. Even if you don't earn enough for something completely free, it can also be used to pay for upgrades.
Pack snacks. Use extra space in your luggage for snacks. The money you save can go towards souvenirs and you'll have space for them in your luggage on the way back. Kids and teens are constantly wanting to munch on things. It's a good idea to have a fridge and a microwave in your hotel room. If there's no microwave, ask. Sometimes they will bring you one or offer a communal one for free.
When you book direct, you will be offered more as far as points and complimentary upgrades. Most importantly, when you run into an issue with a flight or hotel reservation, it's MUCH easier to resolve it with them directly rather than dealing with a 3rd party.
Checking your bags is very helpful and I always do but you also open yourself up to lost or delayed luggage. For this reason, always pack 2-3 complete outfits in your carry-on. If traveling internationally, always have your converter with you. You should also have a portable power bank in your bag. Another good idea is to cross pack if you're traveling with someone. You have some of their clothes and they have some of yours. I still think think the carry-on is necessary because we have had both of our suitcases delayed and the carry-on was clutch.
Having access to a lounge can make any trip feel extra special. The benefit of booking direct with some airlines, is they allow you to purchase a pass. If you're loyal to a particular airline or credit card, you may also have access through them. Look into it. Some lounges even offer free spa services. The food and drinks alone typically make it worth it, especially when you see the prices in the airport. I'm loyal to Delta and my credit card allows me free access and I hope to never give that up.
